The Academy of Water Education is the on-site training center of the California Rural Water Association. Our field-experienced instructors know the ins and outs of being an operator and bring their practical knowledge to the classroom. Courses are taught in classroom and hands-on workshop settings. Our approach is unique and takes the learning experience from theoretical to practical. This course prepares students to take the Grade 1 or Grade 2 Water Distribution Operator exam. This course satisfies Water Distribution’s 36-hour (3-unit) Specialized Training Requirement for Grade 2 and above.
Upon successful completion of the class, students will be able to:

  • Learners will be able to calculate square feet, cubic feet, volume, conversion of flows, pounds formula, mg/l, flow, and head.
  • Learners will be able to recognize the duties and responsibilities of a distribution system operator.
  • The learner will identify the difference between groundwater sources and surface sources storage facilities including maintenance and recordkeeping.
  • The learner will identify distribution system components and the required maintenance & record keeping.
  • Learners will be able to identify water quality issues & relate them to the pumping & storage of treated water.
  • Leaner will be able to identify basic distribution components and understand routine maintenance & care of the system.
  • Leaner will successfully demonstrate knowledge of the principles of chlorine disinfection, including safety requirements for handling both gas and hypochlorite.
  • The learner will successfully describe the safety regulations required for handling chlorine, trenching & shoring, lock-out tag-out, and confined space entry.
  • The learner will successfully demonstrate knowledge of required bookkeeping, maintenance programs, equipment maintenance & personnel administration in the operations of a distribution system.
  • The learner will satisfactorily pass the final exam for the course with a 70& or greater.
  • Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will earn 36 SWRCB contact hours and 3.6 CEUs

Class Information:
This course prepares students to take the Grade 1 or Grade 2 Water Distribution Operator exam.
This course satisfies the 36-hour (3-unit) Specialized Training Requirement for the Grade 2 Water Distribution Operator exam.
There are no prerequisites for this course. Class materials and a calculator with a ten-digit display will be provided.

  • Cancellations must be received by CRWA in writing five business days prior to the event to qualify for a refund.
  • Cancellations received within this time frame, will be subject to a refund less a $25 processing fee.
  • All class transfer requests must be received five business days prior to class and are subject to CRWA approval. Transfers will only be valid within the same calendar year.
