Emerging Contaminants Funding Available to Water Systems

Funding is available to help water systems address PFAS and other emerging contaminants through programs established under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The funding is distributed through the State Revolving Fund as forgivable loans and grants, with a focus on improving drinking water quality and protecting public health.

Eligible community and non-profit public water systems may receive significant financial assistance depending on system size and community status. Disadvantaged communities and systems serving fewer than 25,000 people may qualify for up to 100% of eligible project costs with no repayment required. Larger systems serving non-disadvantaged communities may receive up to 50% of project costs, up to $25 million, as forgivable loans.

Funds can support treatment facility construction or upgrades, development of new water sources, system consolidation, and planning and design activities. Applications must be submitted through the existing State Revolving Fund process. The program prioritizes projects that address PFAS and other contaminants identified on EPA candidate lists.
